Lisbet Kvisgaard (Danish) and friends at Taman Nasional Bukit Duabelas, Jambi
Remember that the above are only suggestions, but I can guarantee you, that they are all nice to have with you, when you are in the jungle in a simple lodging!
  • 5-7 PAIRS OF UNDERWEAR, OTHER UNDER GARMENTS;
  • 1 SLEEPING OUTFITS (a big T-shirt will do);
  • 5 PAIRS OF GOOD SOCKS;
  • 1-2 PAIRS OF GOOD TREKKING/RUNNING SHOES. Travel in one pair and bring the other pair as extras. Make sure that your shoes have proper tracking underneath;
  • 1 PAIR OF SANDALS, PREFERABLY TREKKING SANDALS (for mornings/evenings);
  • 7 T-SHIRTS;
  • 7 PAIRS OF SHORTS, or BICYCLE PANTS or OTHER KIND OF COMFORTABLE COTTON WEAR THAT YOU CAN MOVE ABOUT IN;
  • 1 LONG SLEEVED SWEATSHIRT (protection against mosquitoes as well);
  • 1 PAIRS OF LONG COTTON PANTS (protection against mosquitoes at night);
  • 6 SMALL “GOOD MORNING” TOWELS (these are excellent companions when you are trekking);
  • 1 BLOW-UP NECK CUSHION (The sort you place around your neck when travelling - or a proper blow-up cushion – to use as a pillow at night);
  • 1 FOAM SLEEPING MATTRESS OR ANY OTHER EASY TO CARRY MATTRESS (the self inflating ones are the best);
  • 1 SLEEPING SHEET BAG (Sewn together from a couple of sheets or one big one) OR AN EXTRA SARONG TO USE AS COVER;
  • 1 MOSQUITO NET (many nets are big enough to cover 2 persons);
  • 1 SARONGS (to use when bathing in the river/changing clothes     etc.);
  • 1 BATH TOWEL;
  • 1 SWIM OUTFIT (to wear when having your daily shower in the river);
  • 1 RAIN COAT/PONCHO or other preferred raingear;
  • 1 SUN HAT;
  • 1 FLASHLIGHT plus EXTRA BATTERIES (remember there is no electricity when we are in the forest);
  • 1  INSECT REPELLENT (Cream or Stick. Please avoid spray cans as they pollute and are a scare to people with asthma);
  • 1 SMALL MIRROR (Good to have so that you can remember what you look like! – a great gift to leave behind as well);
  • 1    BIG PLASTIC BAG (For dirty clothes);
    1     BUMBAG FOR MONEY AND PAPERS;
    1    SMALL BACKPACK FOR YOUR DAILY NEEDS of water, sweets, films, batteries, tissue etc. (things handy whenever we are trekking in the jungle);
    3    BAGS OF MIXED NUTS/RAISINS/SWEETS to nibble on during treks
    1    BOTTLE OF YOUR FAVOURITE EVENING DRINK (put it into a plastic bottle for safe transportation).
     SOAP and HAIR SHAMPOO;
  • TOILET PAPER or TISSUE (for all the days we’re in Siberut);
     HANDIWIPES (They make an excellent and fast “wash your hands after a visit to the bushes and before meals”);
  • SUNSCREEN and SUNGLASSES;
  • CAMERA and EXTRA CAMERA BATTERIES plus MEMORY STICK;
  • VIDEO CAMERA plus extra VIDEO BATTERIES;
  • TOILET ARTICLES and PRIVATE MEDICINE/MEDICATION (including Malaria Pills)
  • SMALL ZIP-LOCK PLASTIC BAGS (To pack all your clothes/towels etc. in as the bags will be pretty much out in the open during transportation/portering – remember that you want dry clothes every day!);
It’s really easy to buy mosquito nets in Jakarta and all major towns in Indonesia. They are available at reasonable prices in PASAR BLOK M or PASAR MAYESTIK (Jakarta) or similar “Pasars”, and they are called “Kelambu” in Indonesian. Just get yourself a single one (they come in singles and doubles), and I think that white is the best colour. There are blue nylon ones available, but the holes are big enough for mosquitoes to get in, whereas the white ones are much more finely woven.
The “Good Morning” towels are for sale in the “pasars”.

A REMINDER: BRING A COPY OF YOUR KTP, KIM-S OR PASSPORT. THIS IS ALWAYS GOOD FOR IDENTIFICATION.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE SUGGESTIONS BELOW, AS SOME NIGHTS ARE SPENT IN A SIMPLE HOUSE/CAMP:
HAPPY PACKING
